There is a consensus among those concerned that freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief should be the subject of a new international human rights convention.
In Africa the well-financed advances of Islam have brought protest from Christian churches. Another context is the competition between evangelical Protestants and Catholics in Latin America. The resolution of these questions lies in the human rights’ concept of balance. The right of a religion to teach what it considers to be the truth, to promote itself and to gain new members, has to be balanced against the entitlement of everyone to respect for their existing beliefs or lack of them. No-one may be required to reveal his or her beliefs nor be coerced into abandoning them.
